The Zellige are handmade tiles made in Fez since the 12th century.
This ceramic material offers excellent resistance qualities, it can be used as a cladding material both indoors and outdoors due to its high resistance to temperature changes.
The ceramic is made piece by piece with unrefined white clay coated with glass enamel.
|
The clay is mixed with water and allowed to soak for a day, after which the hands and feet are worked.
Once the optimum point of flexibility and homogeneity has been reached, it is cut into squares of 10 cm and a thickness of 1 cm.
All the pieces are left to dry in the sun before being introduced in a traditional oven for the first firing, then they are removed, dyed and returned for a second.
|
Clay squares are usually placed at different levels according to the degree of temperature required to achieve one color or another.
White is usually placed in the lower tray followed by blue, yellow and green in the upper part. The variations and differences of color, texture, tone and shade, far from being considered imperfections, are the hallmarks of the Zellige.

Draw the design of each tile in ink using a nib on the ceramic square. Trying to select the ceramic beforehand.

It is responsible for cutting the shape of the tile with a hammer or very sharp chisel.
Use the first one as a reference to obtain the others. |
Very precisely, it cuts only the bottom edge of each tile, without touching the glazed face giving it a wedge shape and thus allowing an irregular toothing that reinforces the union of the mosaic.
|
The finishing of all the work depends on him. Lay out the design on the ground and place each tile in the place that corresponds with the glazed side facing the ground. It finally covers the entire mix set.
